One important area of Eugene Monaghan's creative work developed from his involvement with parish catechists and teachers in preparing children and young people for the sacraments of first Confession, first Holy Communion and Confirmation.

Three books of catechetical material were produced over a number of years. Now, following several years of experimental use, these are being revised and re-written. The first - Come to Me - is now available and has already received favourable comment in the local Catholic press.

A Parish Preparation for first Confession and Holy Communion
This little book contains the basic outline of a preparation course for children to celebrate their first Confession and Holy Communion.

It is sufficiently flexible for the catechists to proceed at the pace which is most comfortable for the children. Come to Me is not an "easy read"; and it does contain more detailed material than the children need. The reason for this was to give the catechists ample background material, and to ensure that basic Catholic teaching on these sacraments is presented in a thorough manner. The book contains a challenging Invitation to Parents, a helpful section on Things we see in Church and some useful comments for catechists. There is also a charming little song which has proved popular with young children.
